Pōhutukawa is the sacred star of remembrance, carrying those who have passed since the last rising of Matariki. It reminds us that grief and love walk together, encouraging us to honour those who came before us while celebrating the lives they lived and the legacy they leave behind.
The tāniko woven into this mau kaki is Niho Taniwha, a pattern representing strength, protection, resilience and guardianship. Chosen with intention, it reflects the role our tūpuna continue to play as kaitiaki, watching over us from beyond the physical realm. Though they are no longer with us, their guidance, wisdom and presence remain woven through our lives.
Each muka aho was carefully selected, with naturally occurring red throughout the fibres. These red tones represent the enduring bond between us and those we remember. Paired with black, the colours acknowledge both the weight of loss and the strength we draw from carrying our loved ones with us.
Nine pounamu stars are woven into this piece, representing the nine stars of the Matariki cluster.
This piece is an invitation to pause, remember and honour those whose footprints remain in our hearts, reminding us that while life changes, the bonds we share with our tūpuna endure forever.
