Hiwaiterangi is the whetū of aspirations, dreams and the hopes we send skyward. She encourages us to dream without limits, to set our intentions and to believe in the possibilities that lie beyond the horizon.
The tāniko pattern woven through this mau kaki is Poutama, the stairway to the heavens. Each step represents growth, learning and the journey toward our aspirations. It reflects the pathway our dreams travel as they rise to Hiwaiterangi, the wishing star of Matariki.
The muka was carefully selected for its warm golden colouring, honouring the radiant energy of Hiwaiterangi and echoed through the gold woven into the tāniko.
Nine pounamu whetū are woven throughout the piece, representing the nine stars of the Matariki cluster. Each whetū is connected through mawhitiwhiti, the interweaving of strands that speaks to the interconnected nature of whakapapa. Just as no star exists in isolation, neither do we. Our stories, ancestors, whānau and future generations are all woven together.
This mau kaki is a reflection of dreams carried upward on the steps of Poutama, while remaining firmly connected to the whakapapa that grounds us. A reminder that our aspirations do not belong to us alone, they are carried by those who came before us and those who will follow after us. ✨🌿
